Liven
The ultimate hospo solution
Liven Engage is your behind-the-scenes marketing machine—built just for hospo. It pulls in your POS, loyalty, and ordering data to help you send smarter, better-targeted campaigns that drive repeat visits and orders.
This time, we’re getting into segments: the power move that helps you target VIPs, win back lapsed diners, and serve up offers that actually convert.
What is a segment?
In Liven Engage, a segment is a group of contacts who share something in common, like how often they visit, what they’ve ordered, or how much they’ve spent. Segments help you tailor campaigns to specific audiences instead of blasting the same message to everyone.
The magic of Liven Engage is how it pulls in rich data from across your tech stack. Your segments are powered by live data from:
POS systems: e.g. total spend, last visit date, most ordered items
Loyalty programs: e.g. membership level, points earned, Brandollar redemptions
Digital ordering: e.g. branch or store ordered from, average basket size
Forms and sign-ups: e.g. customer preferences like “vegetarian” or “coffee lover”
Email and SMS behaviour: e.g. email opens, link clicks, unsubscribes
Because Engage is deeply integrated with tools like Abacus, OrderUp, and the Magic App, every interaction feeds your database—keeping your segments fresh, relevant, and ready to roll.
All segments in Engage are dynamic. They update in real time based on contact behaviour or data. For example, say your condition is “tag exists: coffee lover.” Every new customer who fills out a form and gets tagged that way will automatically be added to the segment. If someone no longer qualifies, they’re automatically removed.
This means your segments are always fresh, accurate, and ready to power smarter campaigns.
How segments help your campaigns
Segments help you curate a marketing strategy, tailoring your messaging based on how guests have behaved, identified, spent, or responded in the past. Every data point you collect—via forms, tags, or user activity—helps you group contacts and serve them something that resonates.
Here’s what that can look like:
Reward your regulars: Target high-frequency diners with VIP-only perks.
Win back the wanderers: Nudge lapsed customers with a tempting offer.
Sell smarter: Promote new items to people who’ve ordered similar dishes.
Make it personal: Send birthday treats or anniversary offers to the right people, at the right time.
It’s about being relevant, not just present. The more tailored your message, the more likely your customers are to open, click, book, and come back hungry for more.
How to create a segment
Creating a segment in Liven Engage is simple—but seriously powerful. Here’s how to do it:
Go to Contacts > Manage > Segments
Click “Create a Segment” in the top right corner
Add a name (and an optional description) to help you identify it later
Set your conditions

Liven Engage gives you plenty of condition types to build your perfect segment. These include (but aren’t limited to):
Contact Details – e.g. Date created, last updated, tags, deal status
List Status – e.g. Subscribed to list, added to list, date subscribed
Custom Contact Fields – e.g. Last transaction date, membership level, birthday
Actions – e.g. Submitted a form, opened an email, clicked a link
Predictive Geography – AI-powered fields like country, city, state
Site Data – e.g. Visited your site, total page visits, referral source
You can customise each condition with logic like “is,” “is not,” “contains,” or “exists.” And yes—you can stack multiple conditions and condition groups using AND/OR logic.

For example:
Date created is before 11 April 2024 AND tag is “coffee lover” OR “tea lover.”
Boom. You've now got a targeted list of tea and coffee lovers for your campaign.
We also have saved segments and AI-generated segments.
Saved segment
A saved segment is any segment you’ve created and saved, an always-updating list based on your conditions. You can select and drop it into email campaigns, automations, or reports—anytime you need to target a specific group.
AI-generated segments
AI-generated segments are smart, pre-built lists like Welcome New Subscribers, Nurture Engaged Subscribers, or Re-engage Subscribers, created by Liven Engage using predictive data. Just review, tweak if needed, and start using them in your next campaign.
How to use segments in your campaigns
Once you’ve created a segment, using it in a campaign is easy:
Start a new email campaign (or edit an existing one).
In the “Recipient Selection” section, choose any contact list under Subscribed to list(s).
Then, select your segment under Send to > Segments > Your selection.
Preview your list to check who’s included—your list size will appear on the right.
Continue building your campaign as usual.

You can also use segments in automations—triggering journeys or offers as soon as someone enters a segment.
Ready to start segmenting? Head to Contacts > Manage > Segments and build your first one.
