The ultimate hospo solution

We all know tags help keep things organised. But in Liven Engage, tags aren’t just little labels—they’re powerful signals that drive automation, segment audiences, and personalise communication at scale.

Used right, tags can help you send smarter messages, re-engage the right customers at the right time, and create journeys that feel tailored—without needing a developer on speed dial. If you’re only scratching the surface with manual tagging, it’s time to go deeper.

Here’s how to tag like a pro →

Tags That Power Automations

Tags act as signals that a contact is eligible for a specific campaign.

Tag people who just signed up to your loyalty program as LoyaltySignUp, and create an automation that sends them a welcome gift card or offer as soon as they enter the flow. From there, you can build out lifecycle tagging based on visit behaviour or campaign engagement.

Here are some commonly used tags and how to apply them:

  • LoyaltySignUp – Triggered when someone joins your loyalty program. Use this tag to start a welcome series or issue an onboarding reward.

  • Lapsed30Days – Add this tag when a guest hasn’t visited in 30 days. Use it to power win-back campaigns or time-sensitive offers.

  • BirthdayMonth – Automatically add this tag at the start of a guest’s birthday month. Trigger a birthday reward email or SMS based on this.

  • ActiveOffer / OfferRedeemed – Use one when someone is sent an offer, and switch to the other once it’s redeemed. This keeps your offer targeting clean and avoids resends.

  • FirstVisit / RepeatVisitor – Helps segment and personalise messaging based on visit milestones. Send different messages to someone on visit #1 versus visit #5.

Automations in Liven Engage can add or remove tags automatically based on behaviour, no manual updates needed. This helps keep your database tidy and ensures guests only receive the messages most relevant to them.

A guest signs up, orders twice, goes quiet, then returns after a promo, each step captured by a tag. It’s not just data, it’s a customer journey made actionable through automation.

Smart tip: Always use tags in automations to keep them clean and self-updating. You’ll avoid messy manual work later.

How to Create and Add a Tag in Liven Engage

Tags are easy to set up, and once created, they can be used across automations, segments, and campaigns.

To create a tag:

  1. Go to the Customers tab and select Tags

  2. Click “Create Tag” and give it a clear name (e.g. LoyaltySignUp, Lapsed30Days)

  3. (Optional) Add a short description so your team knows what it’s for

  4. Hit Save

Ways to add tags:

  • Manually via a customer profile

  • In bulk via CSV import

  • Automatically via automations

How to Build a Tag-Based Automation

You can use a tag as a trigger to start an automation the moment it’s applied to a contact.

To set up a tag-triggered automation:

  1. Head to Campaigns > Automations, then click Create Automation

  2. Choose “Tag Added” as your trigger

  3. Select the tag you want to use (e.g. Lapsed30Days)

  4. Add your actions, send an email, issue a reward, apply or remove tags, etc.

  5. Set it to run once per contact to avoid repeating the flow

  6. Save and activate

Tags That Track Customer Behaviour

With the right logic in place, Liven Engage can track patterns like:

Re-engagement

  • Lapsed30Days – No visit in 30 days

  • LoyaltyInactive – Loyalty member, not transacting

  • NoShowEvent – Didn’t attend after RSVP

Promos & Offers

  • Promo_SentFreeDessert – Track who received

  • OfferRedeemed – Trigger follow-up

  • Promo_NoClick – Target with a new format

Preferences & Profiles

  • VeganLover – Ideal for plant-based campaigns

  • CoffeeLoyal – Great for barista-led promos

  • SweetTooth – Perfect for dessert offers

Upsell & Loyalty

  • HighSpender – Ready for VIP perks

  • Visited3xIn30Days – Push loyalty sign-up

  • ReferralUsed – Keep the momentum going

It’s real-time, precise, and helps you act while the signal is hot.

Tag Maintenance: Keep It Lean, Keep It Clean

A great tagging strategy is like a tidy kitchen—everything in its place, easy to find. Clean, consistent tags make it easier to search, avoid duplicates, and keep your segments and automations running smoothly.

  • Naming clearly (Visit_Lapsed30Days, not just Lapsed)

  • Using automations to manage tag assignment

  • Reviewing monthly to archive, merge, or clean old tags

Don’t tag everything. Only tag what you’ll actually use.

Tags Are Your Secret Weapon

In Liven Engage, structured tags help determine who gets a campaign and when → ensuring messages are relevant and timed to real customer behaviour.

Whether you’re launching a referral drive, sending birthday love, or nudging a lapsed guest to return your tags do the heavy lifting.

Structure them. Automate them. Trust them. And above all, tag smarter, not harder
