US Tariffs Add Pressure to Aussie Food & Bev Exports

As of April 2, 2025, the United States has imposed a 10% tariff on all Australian exports, dealing a fresh blow to already pressured food and beverage sectors. Industries like beef production are expected to be particularly impacted, with the tariff adding to ongoing challenges such as rising input costs, workforce shortages, and disrupted supply chains.

The move reflects broader global economic instability, with trade tensions compounding operational risks for Australian exporters. In response, the Federal Government has introduced targeted relief measures in the 2025–26 Budget, aimed at supporting long-term growth and easing the burden on producers.

New Mandatory Food & Grocery Code Now in Effect

As of 1 April 2025, the mandatory Food and Grocery Code of Conduct has officially come into force, introducing a new layer of protection for suppliers and stricter obligations for large grocery retailers and wholesalers.

The Code, now a mandatory industry regulation under the Competition and Consumer Act, covers key areas including supply agreements, payment terms, fresh produce pricing, intellectual property, dispute resolution, and record-keeping. Retailers and wholesalers who fail to comply face serious penalties, with fines exceeding AUD $10 million for breaches.

Enforced by the ACCC, the Code is designed to promote fairness, transparency, and accountability in the food and grocery sector. For suppliers—especially those in the foodservice and hospitality supply chain—it marks a significant shift in how they can negotiate and protect their business interests.

Queensland’s Hotel Boom Ramps Up for 2032 Olympics

With the countdown to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games well underway, Queensland is undergoing a major transformation and the hospitality sector is right in the middle of it. Alongside billion-dollar investments in stadiums, transport, and sporting infrastructure, the state is experiencing a hotel development boom.

As of now, 30 new hotels—totalling 3,838 rooms—are either open or under construction, setting the stage for a tourism and accommodation surge. From Brisbane to the Gold Coast, and regional hubs like Toowoomba and Townsville, this growth is preparing the state for a massive influx of visitors and long-term economic uplift.

For venue operators, this signals a golden window of opportunity. Whether you’re planning to expand, upgrade, or partner in new developments, now is the time to align your business with Queensland’s Olympic vision.
